Plant your trees and shrubs!
Can a city lower its temperature by 2C for just $6.50 per citizen?
Medellin, Colombia proved it is possible.
To fight the urban heat island effect, city leaders launched the Green Corridors project. They planted 880,000 trees and 2.5 million shrubs along roadsides, waterways, and plazas.
The results are incredible:
-Average ambient temperatures fell by 2C (3.6F).
-Heavily shaded microclimates saw drops of up to 5C.
-Air pollution decreased while urban biodiversity flourished.
The entire project cost just $16.3 million. Medellin proves that nature-based solutions are highly capital-efficient investments for public health and climate resilience.
